not so peachy

the unpeachiest peachesWe’re all suckers for a bit of sun dried anything. If we can’t see the sun we figure we might as well just try and eat it.

Hayley and Andrew recently spent some time foraging with fruit farmers in South Africa and came across some peaches gleaming in the sun. Keen to know more they asked the farmers to explain: Sundried means about 3 weeks outside. You have to bathe fruit in Sulphur dioxide first otherwise swarms of flies and animals would come for supper.  Even the rats are put off. As it’s so full of chemicals the farmers said the only trouble they have is with birds, and their going to the loo, mid-flight above the peaches.

Before it’s packed up for the shops, the fruit is put through the sulphite chamber one more time to make sure that it’s well and truly coated. Sulphites really stink, and as the guys discovered, they make you cough if you get close to them. Why humans want to put stuff like that in food is beyond BEAR. We snarl at things like this when people treat fruit this way.

Keep an eye out for sulphites and growl in the comments if you find any in your fridge you didn’t expect to.

I think it’s great that BEAR is 100% against chemically treated foods, I’ve always hated the thought of so many things happening to my food before it goes in my mouth.

Hi Charlotte, we’re glad you take a stand against these things, we hate it too. Hayley could snarl for days about how much she hates sulphites and adding sugar, especially to all the kid’s snacks out there. We saw the other day that even a famous English mustard uses sulphites, which was quite a sad day for our steaks…
